Arabic to English Numbers: frequently asked questions

Are ١٢٣ Arabic numerals or Hindi numerals?

Both names are used. The digits ١٢٣ are officially called Arabic-Indic or Eastern Arabic digits, and many Arabic speakers call them Hindi numerals, while 123 are Western Arabic numerals, often called English numbers. This tool turns the ١٢٣ form into the 123 form whichever name you use.

Does it convert Persian and Urdu digits too?

Yes. Persian digits ۰ to ۹, which differ from Arabic-Indic digits in the shapes of 4, 5 and 6, are converted to 0 to 9 as well.

What happens to Arabic decimal and thousands separators?

They are left as they are, because only digits are converted. If a spreadsheet must read the number, replace the Arabic decimal separator ٫ with a dot and the thousands separator ٬ with a comma.

Does the tool change the rest of my text?

No. Letters, punctuation, spaces and digits that are already in English stay exactly the same. The conversion runs in your browser and the text is not uploaded.
