When to use a GPA calculator

  • A university student working out their semester GPA as soon as final grades are posted.
  • A student testing how a B+ instead of an A in a 4-credit course would change their average.
  • A graduate filling in a job, scholarship or graduate-school application that asks for GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • A student whose university grades on a 5.0 scale double-checking the GPA shown in the student portal.

GPA Calculator: frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is the sum of each course's grade points multiplied by its credit hours, divided by the total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course give 25.2 weighted points over 7 credits, a GPA of 3.6.

What grade points does each scale use?

On the 4.0 scale, A+ and A are 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0 and F 0. On the 5.0 scale, A+ is 5.0, A 4.75, B+ 4.5, B 4.0, C+ 3.5, C 3.0, D+ 2.5, D 2.0 and F 0. Both are generic scales, so check your university's official grading policy.

Can I calculate my cumulative GPA with it?

Yes, if you enter every course from all your semesters, because the result is weighted by credit hours across all rows. If you only know your previous GPA and completed credits, the Cumulative GPA calculator combines them with a new semester more quickly.

How is the GPA rounded?

To two decimal places. The calculation keeps full precision and rounds only the displayed result, so a GPA of 3.456 is shown as 3.46.
