How to generate a barcode online

  1. Choose a standard under Barcode format: CODE 128 for general IDs, CODE 39 for simple labels, or EAN-13, EAN-8 or UPC-A for retail products.
  2. Type your value in Barcode data, following the hint shown under the field for that format.
  3. Click Generate barcode; for EAN and UPC you can leave off the last digit and it will be calculated and added.

Barcode Generator: frequently asked questions

Does this tool give me an official product barcode number?

No. It draws a barcode for a number you already have. EAN and UPC numbers for retail sale are normally licensed from GS1 so they are unique worldwide, while for internal use you can encode your own codes in CODE 128.

Do I need to calculate the check digit myself?

No. Enter 12 digits for EAN-13, 7 for EAN-8 or 11 for UPC-A and the final check digit is calculated and added; if you enter the full number, the tool verifies that its last digit is correct.

Can a barcode contain Arabic text?

No. CODE 128 accepts 1 to 80 printable ASCII characters and CODE 39 only uppercase A to Z, digits, spaces and - . $ / + %, so Arabic letters and emoji are rejected. To encode Arabic text, use a QR code instead.

Which barcode format should I choose?

Use EAN-13, or UPC-A in North America, for retail products, and EAN-8 for very small packages. Use CODE 128 for shipping, inventory and any mix of letters and numbers, and CODE 39 where older equipment requires it.
